Walk The Moon is an American pop-rock band that was started in Cincinnati, Ohio in the year 2008. The band members include Nicholas Petricca as the lead vocalist and the keyboardist, Eli Maiman on the guitar, Kevin Ray on bass, and Sean Waugaman on drums. The band Walk The Moon is probably most famous for its song “Shut up and Dance” which became the number 1 song on the Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart in 2015.
Following the independent release of their first album, “I Want! I Want,” in November 2010, Walk The Moon began performing live across the Midwest and the East Coast. In 2012 they released their second album independently called “Anna Sun” and added more live performances doing over 300 concerts. Their wild dancing, their music, and colorful paint-splattered costumes were making them popular with audiences around the country.
The album Talking is Hard was released on RCA Records in June 2014, the album featured early popular tracks such as Anna Sun and Shut Up and Dance which became the band’s breakthrough single rising to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. As the popularity increased, Walk The Moon began touring throughout the following year, in North America and Europe.
The massive hit “Shut Up and Dance” took off Walk The Moon into the mainstream in 2015. They supported rock giants The Rolling Stones at Stadia and headlined music festivals including Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and Firefly. Through their energetic and engaging live performance, they were able to create buzz for their 2015 fall headlining tour in the United States and Europe. The tour was nearly sold out the band was playing at many of the largest venues that the band had ever been to. These included confetti, face painting, and energy associated with having to dance to some of Walk The Moon's most popular pop tracks.
Following three years of non-stop touring in support of “Talking Is Hard,” in 2016, Walk The Moon regrouped to start focusing on new material for the album while also participating occasionally in festival gigs. They toured at home in Ohio for most of 2017 working on their third album called “What If Nothing” which was improved in terms of songwriting as well as adding more variety to their music. In November 2017, they came out with the first of the glittery ‘80s-inspired songs with “One Foot”, which gave a hint of the synthesized sound that would come next.
At the beginning of 2018 an official tour called “Press Restart Tour” was announced to support the new album called “What If Nothing” released in November. The tour commenced in April with thirty shows across the North American region with Company of Thieves and Welshly Arms as opening acts. The fans were thrilled, and most of the shows were sold out in advance till the last episodes. The concerts also presented fresh tracks such as “One Foot” and other hits like “Shut Up and Dance”. There were; colorful costumes, confetti showers, and beach balls soaring over the happy dancing fans throughout the night. Adding to the jovial environment, there were glow sticks, leis, and face paint.
Having taken June and July off to play a few festivals and record a new album, the band continued with the “Press Restart Tour” across America in August. The second leg of this tour began in September running through until October when the band played in bigger venues and amphitheaters with indie pop artist New Politics and duo Lovelytheband joining them for some of the shows. The shows began with the grooving bass line of ‘Press Restart’ and also had other nascent songs that are perfect for the pop radio playlist. The interaction with the fans was still very active in these interactive concerts, with parents with their kids, friends, and couples all grooving to the music. Thus, by the end of 2018, Walk The Moon performed more than 60 concerts with 500,000 enthusiastic fans.
After so long, the “What If Nothing” album came out on November 9, 2018. The band kept on with the extensive touring for the next six months in theaters and concert halls across North America and Europe for their new record that critics raved about. Broncho, an alternative dance-rock group, opened the high-intensity performances during the spring leg of the tour in 2019. Some of the creative live shows from Walk The Moon were colorful abstract animations as a backdrop while the band played more polished new songs like ‘Kamikaze’ and ‘Timebomb’ along with familiar fan favorites. Despite this newfound fame and success, Walk The Moon has never seemed to lose touch with their audience and their genuine connection to them. Their performances are nothing short of jovial and resemble house parties in which people can dance.
Following the successful more than a year-long global album tour with over 100 high-voltage performances, Walk The Moon declared their holiday break and their plans to resume touring in early 2020. Audiences remain anxious for the bands to return for a second round of paint-throwing and confetti-shooting performances for “What If Nothing,” and concerts that bring fans together to dance and headbang under the clear starry night.
