The Whispers is also an R&B vocal group that was founded in Los Angeles, California in 1963. The original members of this group were Wallace “Scotty” Scott, Marcus Hutson, and Gordy Harmon. They formed in high school and were later discovered by Donny Gerrard, who offered them a record label deal with Laurel Records. They released their first single, ”I Only Meant to Wet My Feet,” in 1964.
Over the next several years, there were shifts in terms of the membership composition of the group. By the early 1970s, the members include Wallace “Scotty” Scott, Marcus Hutson, Leaveil Degree, and Walter Scott. This lineup began to achieve greater chart success in the R&B listings with songs such as “Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong” in 1970 and “It’s a Love Thing” in 1971.
In 1973 the Caldwell twins, Walter ‘Walt’ Caldwell & Nicholas Caldwell also joined the group. This marked the beginning of what is regarded as the pinnacle and the most successful phase of The Whispers. Their melodic voices and love songs began to achieve more significant commercial popularity. For the rest of the 1970s, they got some more number-one R&B and Dance songs such as ‘And the Beat Goes On’ released in 1979, which was 20th also on the Billboard Hot 100.
1980 saw the Whispers commence what was to be a very hectic period of touring. They toured the country performing in different concert halls, theaters, and clubs. They also became favorites on the Las Vegas circuit. Besides doing their concerts, The Whispers also toured as an opening band for many well-known artists at large venues such as The Greek Theater in Los Angeles.
The hits did not stop in the early eighties with songs such as “It's a Love Thing,” “I Can Make it Better and “Turn Me Out. ” The band continued to sell out concerts in major cities with fans of soul, R&B, and pop music. Most of their songs during this period began spilling over into college and mainstream radio and the Billboard Hot 100. Audiences and critics alike complimented the group for branching out into pop without losing the smooth soulful harmonies they had introduced.
In the year 1983, The Whispers was to go on their most extensive tour ever in support of the freshly released Love for Love. They performed in big halls such as The Apollo in New York and the Harrahs Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. By this time in their career, The Whispers did have a reputation for being very good at stage performance. Their clean dance moves and vibrant matching uniforms impressed fans and set them apart from other R&B groups of the time. Audiences and critics appreciated the vigor the band displayed on the stage.
The Love for Love album was a success and produced several popular tracks and club bangers. The title track and Just Gets Better with Time both charted on the R&B top 10 and the group received nominations for various music awards. Their concert business expanded and the group was now able to ask for higher performance fees as they attracted larger audiences.
During the 1980s, The Whispers continued to entertain the public with their romantic and sensual brand of soul and R&B music. 1987s Just Gets Better with Time: Yet another example is the platinum-selling ‘The Best of the Ballads’ that compiled their most popular romance tunes. Promoting this album involved the group performing their largest tour in terms of the number of venues visited and the audience turnout.
As of the end of 1989, the Whispers performed at hundreds of concerts all over the globe definitively positioning themselves as one of the most successful R&B vocal groups with an excellent reputation for their live performances. They introduced class, style, and amazing voices to the stage earning them the praises of critics and followers. As a result, through constant touring, they were able to perfect their harmonizing in addition to developing the means to consistently hold and captivate audiences.
The Whispers are still active to date, performing live occasionally up to this year. It appears some members of the group have changed over the years but their harmonious vocals and perfectly synchronized stage performance win the hearts of many of the band’s fans.
