Among the most well-known and successful music groups that have ever existed worldwide are the Jacksons. Originally known as The Jackson 5; Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael, this band created hit songs including "ABC," "I Want You Back," and "I'll Be There"; their pop/soul songs and notably young Michael Jackson's brilliantly choreographed performance are well-known.
The brothers (except for Jermaine who stayed with Motown) began touring under the name The Jacksons after leaving Motown Records in 1975 and subsequently signed to Epic Records. Younger brother Randy featured saw more success with songs including "Enjoy Yourself," "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)," and "Can You Feel It." Michael was launching his amazing solo career with classics like "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough," "Rock with You," and "Bill," while the group recorded and toured extensively well into the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Though most of the members would periodically appear on Michael's records and shows, The Jacksons essentially disbanded as a group following the release of the "Victory" album and the following "Victory" tour in 1984. Now an unmatched worldwide phenomenon ready for even more historic world tours for Bad and Dangerous in the latter half of the 1980s and early 1990s. But controversies and legal problems began to haunt Michael following the 1990s, therefore removing all possibility for a full Jackson Five reunion tour.
The new Chapter piqued interest in a Reunion Tour. However, after Michael passed suddenly and The Jacksons were expected to get back together and tour to pay tribute to Michael's music, the interest shot up in 2009. Since the early to mid-1990s, four of the brothers had never been performed together before.
There was great excitement and at last, in late 2011, word leaked out that The Jacksons were all ready to embark on their first major tour in almost three decades in 2012 under the name Unity Tour. Since the Victory Tour and until Michael Jackson passed away, it would be their first time touring the United States. Fans, the music business, and the media all show great excitement over the tour announcement.
The Tour of Unity Beginning in Casino Rama in Rama, Canada, the Unity Tour got underway on June 20, 2012. For the brothers, it was a poignant night to be on stage once more and share songs for the first time in concert without Michael. Along with a montage section honoring Michael where his songs were played in the background as the brothers stood around, they performed Jackson 5 and Jacksons' famous tunes. Among the songs sung were I Want You Back, ABC, The Love You Save, I'll Be There, Can You Feel It, Do’s Stop til you Get Enough, and Billie Jean.
Along with other big American cities such as Detroit, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Washington DC, and New York, the tour went to Though they praised the brother's longevity, critics of the program were almost uniform in their compliments on the duo's performance skills, their selection of pop/soul classics, and the respect shown to Michael's musical prowess. Reportedly sold for 47 shows, more than 350,000 tickets demonstrated the audience's relentless affection for the Jackson family's performances.
Fans still lined up requesting more Jackson reunion events if ever, even though the Unity Tour was deemed a success. As always, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine Marlon, and occasionally Randy expect more reunion events for further celebration; no specific strategy has been developed for this in recent years. Thirty years after Victory and ten years after Michael's death, the Jackson phenomenon still captivates the public every time speculations of their reunion surface. If for a group with an unparallel music legacy as they provided back in the 60s, 1970s, and 80s the fascination remains as great as ever to see The Jacksons return in the concert arena once more.
