Taylor Swift Eras just ended her critically acclaimed Eras tour where she sang songs from every single era of her immensely successful career for audiences around the globe. The tour was a series of more than 50 performances in the United States, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Overall, on the Eras tour, Swift was able to perform for over two million fans across the world.
November 18 and 19 saw the final two shows of the tour in Los Angeles at SoFi Stadium. Since a female musician had never been able to play two nights at an NFL stadium consecutively, these events were unprecedented. Of course, Swift's songs—both new and old—were included, along with guest appearances, dancing, special effects, and performances.
Swift, the sharp businesswoman she is, noted the two SoFi Stadium events to be released as a concert movie sometime in 2023. She alluded to the movie in her Instagram story after the last performance: "All I can say is that when I get home I finally get to watch the Eras tour concert film I'm so stoked. I am proud of this show and our team who made this spectacle possible".
Well, when should fans be able to see Era's tour performance footage at home? The release of the movie is not set at this point. But drawing on Swift's Instagram post, given the chronology of her other concert films, we can establish a reasonable estimate.
Over her career, Swift has produced five concert films/specials: Her CMT Crossroads performance with Def Leppard in 2009; her Speak Now World Tour Live album in 2011; her The Red Tour Live album on Netflix in 2013; her Reputation Stadium Tour concert film on Netflix in 2018; and her City of Lover concert special on Disney+ in 2020.
Considering those projects, it can be stated that, as a rule, Swift releases concert films and albums within 12-18 months after the tour’s completion. Her two tour live albums were released approximately one year after she was done with the corresponding tours. The Reputation Stadium Tour film was then released on Netflix in December 2018, six months after the conclusion of the Reputation tour in late summer of 2018. And finally, her Paris City of Lover special was filmed in September 2019 and was released on Disney+ in May 2020, which was eight months in waiting.
So, based on all of this, it would make sense to expect Taylor’s Eras tour film to come out sometime between May 2023, which is six months after the tour ended, and May 2024, which is 18 months after the tour finished. She could drop it earlier, at the end of the year around the holiday season, but a spring or summer release is more feasible.
When and where will the Eras tour film be available for streaming? That is another open question. The last concert movie she released was in 2020’s City of Lover which was released exclusively on Disney+ after she agreed to a deal with Disney. As we know, Swift recently released her re-recorded albums and has seemingly settled the dispute over her early albums with Scooter Braun, which means that although she recently was affiliated with Disney, she is no longer.
The record-breaking Reputation Stadium Tour movie premiered on Netflix, yet Swift also might prefer the release of the 2023 concert film through a platform she partly owns. This could be pointing to Apple Music or Amazon Music, services where Taylor Swift has artist pages and which have benefitted from her talent and creations in years past.
Although Swift herself has not said anything about partnerships or distribution strategies for her upcoming Eras tour movie, fans still eagerly await and anticipate that she will be part of another massive concert film. Regardless of the final location, fans across the globe will be more than willing to celebrate the Eras tour at some point in 2023.
Until an announcement comes with release details from Taylor Swift and her team, the Eras tour concert film project is somewhat ambiguous. However, Taylor Nation is looking forward to watching the entire Eras tour in a movie soon with all that Ms. Swift has revealed about her phenomenal 2022 tour around the world. Following the astronomical success of Midnights and the Eras tour this year, a concert film appears to be the ideal ending to an incredible chapter of Swift’s storied career.
