  • Ottmar Liebert Concert Tour

Ottmar Liebert is a guitarist and composer who has won Grammy awards, and he plays Spanish-style easy-listening music. Since releasing the Nouveau Flamenco album in 1989, Liebert has gone on to produce over 25 albums and perform worldwide.

Liebert was born in Germany but became an exchange student in the United States. He has been playing guitar since his teenage years and his inspiration included everything from Carlos Santana to Wes Montgomery. He combines flamenco, jazz, and pop in his performances. Liebert formed Luna Negra, an instrumental guitar band, and eventually started his career as a solo artist.

His 1990 album Marita: That Songs brought him into the mainstream as it climbed to 38 on the Billboard charts and is part of Shadows and Storms. It included his debut song Barcelona Nights, a perfect example of how Liebert plays guitar – smooth, but complex. He uses tremolo, rasgueado, and trills that are associated with Spanish flamenco dancing techniques. But his music stays fairly soft and mellow, which makes it popular among the crowds. In the 90s, Liebert went on to make more fans as he toured with his band and also released more albums.

By 2001, Ottmar Liebert and Luna Negra were touring approximately one hundred performances annually throughout the United States. Some of the events that year were concerts in Denver, Santa Barbara, San Diego, and at Santa Fe Bandstand New Mexico. The shows included songs from Liebert’s discography and flamenco classics, renditions of Camaron de la Isla and Paco de Lucia.

It is noteworthy that in 2004, Liebert was already 15 years conducting live performances. In celebration, he proceeded to go on his at the time biggest world tour where he went to Japan, Spain, Italy, and over twenty cities in the United States where he performed in places such as the Warner Theatre in Washington D. C, Beacon Theatre in New York and the Arrowhead Pond arena in Anaheim California. The following year he released a live retrospective CD Ottmar Liebert & Luna Negra Live in Concert.

In 2006, Liebert gathered a list of talented musicians to perform on the 2006 Winter Solstice Guitar Summit tour. With him were fellow guitarists Jesse Cook, Johannes Linstead, and Luna Negra on the cello. Some of the places they came to perform were San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, Cleveland, and Alexandria. There was a colorful arrangement of the various guitar specialties that culminated in a wonderful performance.

In 2007-2008, Ottmar Liebert embarked on another large-scale worldwide tour to promote the Nouveau Flamenco 1990-2007 box set collection. The tour was done in the fall of 2007 and spring of 2008 with North American dates preceding Japanese concerts. Other shows in this tour stretch encompass the Orange County Performing Arts Centre in Costa Mesa, the McKenna Theatre in San Jose, and Yoshino Hall in Tokyo.

Since the end of the nineties, Liebert has also remained busy recording new material for his albums and performing live music concerts, although not as frequently as before. Some of the live performances since 2010 include at Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord, NH, a co-headline show with Jesse Cook at the Ridgefield Playhouse CT, and annual performances at SOhO Restaurant and Music Club in Santa Barbara where Liebert has settled.

As we move forward, the year 2023 will be a significant one since it will be the thirty years since Ottmar Liebert started recording. To date, there are no set tour dates but people can expect some kind of shows and albums to celebrate this anniversary. Taking into account the number of new compositions and the desire to continue performing during the past three decades, there is no doubt that one can expect even more pleasant performances from Ottmar Liebert in the future.

Whenever and wherever he performs next, it’s going to be a night where long-time fans of the artist as well as new converts to his music can sit back and be wowed by amazing flamenco-influenced guitar. The concert is still one of the memorable experiences, watching the fascination of Liebert’s fast yet fluent fingers playing every note on his guitar, and creating everything from soft melodies to complex and rich tremolo sounds. His repertory is over 25 albums long and so his setlists, which range from dreamy covers to the Liebert originals never seem to grow stale.
