Many people who are fans of music artist David Bowie and the movie, Labyrinth, have been patiently waiting for this concert tour since its inception. There is no official word about this for now, but there are some indications that a Labyrinth concert tour might still materialize someday in the future.
Labyrinth was made in 1986 and starred David Bowie as the character named Jareth, the Goblin King. The musical film fantasy soon rose to popularity due to such number of colorful characters and the young Jennifer Connelly. Some of the most popular songs over the years include Dance Magic Dance, Within You, and Underground among others.
In 2016, the anticipation for the Labyrinth concert tour was sparked by the news that David Bowie had died in the early part of that year. Fans expected that the concert, which used the soundtrack of the film, would be a continuation of Bowie’s impact on the world. Adding to the rumor was the statement given by comedian John Stamos, who is a friend of both Bowies and has been a fan of Labyrinth for a long. After Bowies death Stamos proposed, that a Labyrinth tour was being considered to be in the works of creation, as a tribute to Jim Henson’s imagination and Bowie’s music.
But no Labyrinth tour was announced that year officially. However, fans remain optimistic that it may transform into a reality someday. Here's why:
1 The David Bowie estate has ensured that the memory of the legend continues.
Even though Bowie is no longer with us for over five years now, his management has done a great job of constantly promoting his collection of timeless songs. Some of the latest posthumous albums include Nothing Has Changed, Legacy, and Toy with several box set compilations in an ongoing series. Another musical based on Bowie's songs Lazarus was produced by Off-Broadway in the same year 2015. This indicates that the Bowie estate is keen on adapting Bowie’s work for new generations and is not avoiding chances to market his creativity. That being the case, it is not hard to envision the estate green-lighting a Labyrinth tour if a good opportunity presents itself.
2: Several other personalities have shown their concern
Besides the words of Stamos several years ago, other people connected with Labyrinth have said that they would be ready to participate in the concert tour if it were being planned. Brian Froud, the costume designer of the films’ distinctive fantasy look and darker imagery, envisions that the Labyrinth show could have amazing effects. Another opponent of the idea is choreographer Gates McFadden who also views it as having fantastic potential if the right people are involved. Their positive attitudes indicate that many great creative people would be able to ensure that a Labyrinth tour would indeed become successful.
3 Fantasy musicals are in great demand today
Over the past few decades, fantasy musicals, in particular, have gained great popularity. Musicals like Wicked, Beetlejuice, and Six have gone on to become Blockbusters due to the kind of fantasy which helps in having vibrant, quirky costumes possible, and magical turns. Labyrinth's quirky fantastical world is perfect for a stage musical adaptation. Not to mention Game of Thrones which has also proven that the mainstream audience is interested in adult-oriented fantasy franchises; translating into it being a great time for a Labyrinth concert tour.
4 The show is also gaining popularity among the youthful generation.
Although Labyrinth has always had a cult following of adults who know the 86 films, the movie has also gained new fans among younger generations in more recent years. However, within the last couple of years, Labyrinth has been introduced to newer generations through streaming services including Netflix. The Jim Henson Company has also envisioned a Labyrinth spinoff film with Scott Derrickson in the director’s chair which has further boosted the franchise's prospects. This new crop of viewers has doubtless generated new demand for Labyrinth tie-ins they can see performed live.
5 Creative team gathered for a possible prequel
Alongside the spinoff movie in the works, an ideal creative team has been established by the Jim Henson Company that could also be employed to make a Labyrinth concert tour. Lisa Henson, CEO of the production company, has shown interest in making a sequel to Labyrinth across platforms and not only cinematographics. With creative heads like her in charge and managing what the next generation of Labyrinth brings, the opportunity for a concert tour has never been more perfect.
That the folks behind making this have some serious degree of interest in making something like a Labyrinth concert tour has not been officially confirmed yet but all indications are that yes there is indeed interest. Since musical fantasy films are popular now and given that the Jim Henson Company is interested in revisiting the Labyrinth franchise, it is not impossible to see a Labyrinth tour being made in the future. It would be ideal to pay homage to Henson's imagination, and Bowie’s tunes, and grant audiences the much-needed live Labyrinth experience. However, while fans' eagerness is easily understandable, things that involve many parties usually take time since there are many strings attached. But should everything fall into place one day as planned the Labyrinth concert spectacular fans have dreamt of for years could still come alive.
