  • Founded in 1988, the American rock band 311 comes from Omaha, Nebraska. Lead guitarist Jim Watson, bassist P-Nut, drummer Chad Sexton, and SA Martinez are among the musicians included as vocalist/guitarist Nick Hexum. 311 has developed a devoted following since its founding three decades ago, which became lovingly known as 311 Nation based on its energetic live performances. Radio-friendly songs including "Down," "Amber," "Love Song," and "Come Original" help one to remember them.

311 toured the Midwestern United States in the early days of their career and started to get more and more successful after publishing their third studio album in 1995. Songs like "Down" and "All Mixed Up" caught the attention of the alt-rock listeners. 1997 saw Transistor, which reached platinum depending on such singles as "Beautiful Disaster," follow that success. Every one of the 311 albums that followed ranked among the top ten of the Billboard 200. Their seventh studio album, 2020s Voyager, was just released.

Apart from releasing albums, 311 has been touring nonstop for more than 25 years to support their recorded work. They have so fostered expectations of ongoing entertainment and good energy for every live performance. 311 usually embarks on a full-fledged tour in support of every new record they release, but they could sporadically toss some dates in between. Not unusual for one of the most committed bands in the rock world, 2023 will be.

Although there is no current routing, 311 will most likely tour next summer showcasing songs from their yet-to-be-released 14th album based on their pattern. The new album is expected to be released sometime in the first half of 2023; it has not yet a title. Since 2017, this will be their first full-length record not written and recorded with Scotch Ralston, a long-standing member of the band. 311 is collaborating instead with producer John Feldmann, who has past worked with bands such as Goldfinger, The Used, and 5 Seconds of Summer. The fresh working relationship with Feldmann fuels hopes that 311 may veer toward more pop-punk on the forthcoming record.

311’s devoted followers are eager to find out how this musical transition translates to the live concert setting. About three and a half decades after their formation in late 1988, 311 has performed somewhat around 1,100 gigs. While they now boast a rather massive archive of music, they have shown a remarkable ability to rework most of their older tunes into a show-ready format alongside purely new songs. For instance, during some shows on the last major tour in 2018, 311 performed such hits as “Down” and “Amber,” along with songs from the Mosaic release, including “Too Much to Think” and “On a Roll. ” The last tour was a success, where the band performed to more than half a million fans in over 50 dates, including two headlining shows at the 25th Annual Reggae on

The 2018 tour was a relatively low-key year for 311 in terms of touring so fans should expect a lengthy touring campaign to support the early 2023 album. This band has a very dedicated fan base, which many people refer to as The Excitable Ones, and they can always be counted on to turn out in force when the 311 band comes to their area. In the past, larger markets have had 311 play multiple night stands at such historic places as the Red Rocks, Colorado, The Fillmore, California, and Terminal 5 New York City among others. Recent summer tours have seen the band perform often at amphitheaters near large cities as well they have frequently headline.

More details about routing and support acts are yet to be released; however, most of the typical major cities should see a 311 tour in 2023. Previous summer tours have been to one or more performances in cities such as Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Boston, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Denver, Phoenix, San Diego, Seattle, and more. The band also wants to make it to small markets that are sometimes left out by musicians and other artists. In the summer of the previous year, 311 performed in North Dakota, Montana as well as in the state of Maine. Spanning over 30 years of touring, they have nurtured one of the most dedicated fan bases in all of rock music.

Of course, what the 311 Nation wants more than anything is another multi-band summer extravaganza like the Unity Tours or the reggae-rock-infused 311 Pow Wows of the early ‘00s. Such events revealed that 311 did play festivals along with other bands fitting the same formula, such as Sublime, Long Beach Dub Allstars, No Doubt, Incubus, O. A. R, and Others. As much as it remains in the rumors, there is a high possibility that 311 might not be alone on the 2023 ride.
