  • 311 is an American musical group from Omaha, Nebraska, formed in 1988 and is considered an influential rock band. The band includes vocalist and guitarist Nick Hexum, lead guitarist Jim Watson, bassist P-Nut, drummer Chad Sexton, and SA Martinez on vocals and DJ. 311 has been on the road since the beginning, performing tight live shows with a fusion of rock, hip-hop, reggae, and funk. 311 enjoys a very loyal fan base that comes out in large numbers each time the band sets out on tour.

311 played their first national tour way back in 1992 to support their first album, “Music”. They toured again in support of their 1994 album “Grassroots,” mostly playing gigs in the Midwest and southwestern parts of the country. The band began its journey to stardom with the release of its third album, titled simply, “311” in 1995. “Down” is 311’s most successful single yet and its rap-rock-reggae style brought the band’s music to radio stations throughout the United States. They were soon able to move from playing at major theaters and amphitheaters because their popularity expanded rapidly.

The 311 concert tour was in full swing starting 1996-1997. Following the release of their self-titled album, they toured the summer music festivals performing at such events as Lollapalooza and had their headlining tour in North America. Their concerts had evolved into spectacular events in the eyes of the fans, pitting aggressive songs for moshing with cool reggae beats. The audiences were getting larger, the atmosphere was escalating and 311 was becoming one of the hottest up-and-coming live bands at the time.

Following their first experimental album titled “Transistor” in 1997, 311 ramped up their aggressive touring schedule even more. In 1998 they came to Europe for the first time, touring with No Doubt. In North America, they were already topping the bill at amphitheaters and even large arenas in some of these markets. They had a growing army of listeners and the 311 Navy was being formed. The die-hard fans traveled from one city to another, they knew the lyrics of all the 311 songs and were always eager to see them perform.

As for the 311, the early 2000s were the time of their mainstream success and their tours represent the band’s popularity at its peak. The “Soundsystem” album sold platinum based on the songs, “Come Original” and “Amber”. Their subsequent US concert tours were typically 8-10 months long and swung by between 50-75 cities. The shows had long solos, a diverse range of songs, and a lot of audience participation. By the time of the 311 live experience, the band had created a generation of legions of fans, and stoners who consume marijuana.

In the year 2004, 311 performed in their first 311 Caribbean Cruise concert event. The 4-night cruise, beginning in Miami, had excellent main attractions of 311 and some wonderful sideshows. And was such a success that it became an annual event of 311 Caribbean Cruise. Since then, every March except in 2020 and 2021, the 311 Navy sailed to exotic destinations such as Turks & Caicos, Jamaica, and Grand Cayman for the ultimate floating concert with 311 as the featured performer.

311 Tours took a little break after their much more progressive “Uplifter” album. But they came back re-energized and hungry after their 2011 album Universal Pulse came into the market. Since then, touring consistently year after year, 311 has been alternately crisscrossing between small theaters, open-air booths, large festivals, and single performances. This they did in their 2016 tour where they played at traditionally famous places such as the Madison Square Garden and the Red Rocks Amphitheater. Demonstrating their enduring popularity after 30+ years, 311 entertained packed throngs during 80+ shows in 2019.

Covid-19 forced the touring business to almost come to a standstill in 2020 but 311 plans to get back on the road very soon. Their twelfth studio album titled “Voyager” is planned to be released in 2022. SA Martinez, one of the founding members of this band said in the recent interviews that 311 has a huge amount of energy and enthusiasm built up after the forced halt due to touring. Everything suggests that their next performances will be as energetic, chaotic, and glorious as before. 311 concert experience remains an active and popular one to this date, after over 25 years of almost incessant touring. The group of six performing artists and their fans have positive expectations for the continuation of the story that will take place in the 311 concert tour.
